Short History of Bristol Boro |
Bristol has evolved steadily from its establishment in the year 1681. One of the oldest communities in the state of Pennsylvania, the Borough takes pride in its rich and textured history. Bristol served as a marketplace for the surrounding region during the early 1700s. Many of the timber and gristmills located within the Borough of Bristol processed and shipped many products from the area farms. Throughout the late 1700s, Bristol flourished as a popular resort area for many people who were attracted by the Delaware River's scenery and cooling breezes.
With the construction of the Delaware Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad, in the early 1800s, Bristol continued to grow and prosper. Numerous industries located between the canal and the railroad, created a strong economic base for the Borough while providing the surrounding area with materials that were vital to development.
From the late 1800s to the present day, Bristol continues to play a vital role within the local and regional economy. Bristol played an important role in both W.W.I and W.W.II by aiding in the construction of ships and airplanes respectively. Today, Bristol exists as an economically viable community. The Borough houses numerous manufacturing and commercial facilities, creating jobs for local residents. Redevelopment areas are currently being programmed for development, including land along the Delaware River. The central business district within the center of town has received various improvements over the years and is also part of a redevelopment agenda that will hopefully revitalize the entire commercial area.
